BLOCK ISLAND BIRDING TOURS

Block Island is a birder's delight any time of the year. Take a birding tour to Block Island in May for the return of the colorful neo-tropical songbirds. In September and October, visit the gathering of huge numbers of southbound birds. Day trips or over night accommodations are available for a reasonable cost. We design custom tours tailored just for your group! 2 to 6 people is optimum.

Our expertise is with small groups and couples. Experience has shown that although a little more expensive, the smaller the group the more responsive we can be to customize and carry through with a rewarding birding trip. All our trips are lead by an expert birder. Call for customized birding trips, arrangements, availability and prices. Below are just some of the great local birding spots.

Block Island:Fall birding nirvana! Very good in the Spring too. One can easily spend several days in several island habitats birding. Optimal birding is always a function of weather but during autumn there is always something to see.

Trips by the day:

Swan Point Cemetery in Providence. A well known Spring spot for Warblers. With good weather 20 to 30 warbler species can be seen well.

Charlestown breachway is great for so many things but especially summer for shorebirds.

Napatree Point, Watch Hill (Westerly, RI). This is a premier and easily located spot for raptors. Prime time is late August to early October.

National Wildlife Refuges located in Rhode Island:

Trustom Pond NWR. Shoreline and coastal marsh habitat yields excellent variety of species including waterfowl, songbirds and raptors. September through May.

Ninigret Park NWR. Songbirds and raptors. September - October. April - June.

Pettaquamscutt Cove NWR. Shorebirds, raptors and songbirds. Kayak is the only accessibility. Kayak tours include kayak rental. Kayak trips from May to October.

Sachuest Point NWR. Internationally known for its winter home for Harlequin ducks. Mid November to March for Harlequins. Excellent waterfowl spot in Winter.

Audubon Society of Rhode Island properties are open to the public:

Kimball (Charlestown, RI). Songbirds. Good September and into October.

Fisherville Brook ( Exeter, RI). Great varied habitat property. OK in the Fall but really better in spring for songbirds.

Norman Bird Sanctuary (Newport/Middletown RI). This is a private bird sanctuary to which we have access. Great for songbirds. April - June. September - October.

Rhode Island Dept. of Environmental Management (D.E.M.) areas. This state organization and its Fish and Wildlife division have some excellent birding habitats.

Great Swamp management area (Kingston, RI) is superb for its variety of habitat and of all types of birds.

Arcadia management area (Eastern border of Rhode Island) is great for songbirds and warblers.

Galilee Bird Sanctuary (Narragansett, RI Point. Judith area) for shorebirds in summer.

Any of the above can easily be combined into a great birding trip customized to your schedule. All we would need to know is exactly what dates you are interested in.
